The Next Frontier in Carbon Capture is a Hungry Bacterium

Here is what I am most excited about for 2023: Bacteria acting as powerful carbon capture organisms transforming greenhouse gases into ethanol and other useful chemicals.



Advances in next-generation sequencing technology and gene editing are turning carbon emissions into valuable material commodities. The concept of cultivating bacteria in a lab that can ferment both CO and CO2 and effectively convert it into ethanol which can then be made into polyester fabrics, aviation fuels and chemicals would mean a radical rethinking of materials as we know it now. Bioeconomy 2.0 is certainly on the fast-lane for 2023. Big shoutout to LanzaTech and Illumina leading the way
